Video Games Live to have several special shows in July

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Alexander Sliwinski

Video Games Live continues touring with a few special shows during the month of July. On July 10, the National Symphony Orchestra (which did two sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center in DC) will perform at the WolfTrap Feline Center in Virginia. Sid Meier, Civilization IV vocalist Ron Ragin and game composer Grant Kirkhope (Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata) will all be in attendance.

For Texans, Halo composer Mike Salvatori will make a “special guest appearance” at the Ft. Worth show on July 14. A few days later, The Houston Symphony will perform the show in its namesake city for two shows on July 18, in collaboration with MusiCON 09. The special afternoon show is entitled “Blizzard Live!” and will showcase songs from the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo games. Five Blizzard composers will attend and participate in a Q&A panel.

There will also be a performance at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 23 at the outdoor Embarcadero Marina Park, which will include synchronized fireworks. Tickets are available at the Video Games Live site. Check out the full list of July tour stops after the break.

LittleBigPlanet: We’re Ready To Believe You [Lbp]

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Luke Plunkett

Not much of a teaser this, is it? Unless there’s some obscure British pop culture icon that also says “who ya gonna call?” we’re somehow not aware of, it’s pretty clear we’ll soon be getting some Ghostbusters DLC for LBP.

Cuddly proton packs? Big-eyed slimer? The chance to create a level where Janine is brought together with her true love, Egon Spengler? We’d like all of those things. Those and the revelation that the “Sacktue of Liberty” can carry four sackboys in its head, and stomp around a level to Jackie Wilson.

JBO: Joystiq Box Office, June 29 – July 3

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Kevin Kelly

We can't be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we'll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix's Watch Instantly, and Blu-ray each week.

Recommendation of the Week:

Sunshine (Blu-ray: $29.99): We all know about Danny Boyle and Slumdog Millionaire; winning a few Oscars will do that to your movie, particularly if it's great. However, his sci-fi masterpiece Sunshine is severely underrated and underwatched. The Sun becomes an ominous character in this taut thriller, which, granted, has a plot point that could be completely jettisoned to make for a perfectly streamlined film. However, the sound, the action, and the attention to detail in this movie make this a must see in HD.

Read for the full list on a system by system basis just after the break, this time with a bent toward the upcoming Independence Day holiday this Saturday. As usual, we'll see you at the popcorn st ... well, actually we won't see you at all. But you catch our drift.

PS3 Bundle Includes MGS4, Killzone 2 [PS3]

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Luke Plunkett

Normally, hardware bundles are a spotty affair. A game you don’t really want, or two games, one you kinda want, one you just do not want. But this bundle, on sale at Best Buy next Sunday, looks great!

Sent in by a Best Buy employee, and confirmed by other BB employees, it’s an 80GB PS3 bundled with copies of two of the biggest games on the system: Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2. All that for the asking price of a standard PS3, $400.

It’s one hell of a bundle. It’s like getting a Wii with Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy, or a 360 with Gears 2 and Halo 3. But perhaps more importantly, it’s also one hell of a saving; perhaps Best Buy need to clear out their stock of 80GB PS3s for oh, I don’t know, a new PS3?

Will Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 work with each other?

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by John Callaham

A number of fans express their displeasure over the fact that Valve had decided to release a sequel to their 2008 shooter Left 4 Dead less than a year after the original. But does Valve have something up their sleeve that could merge the two games in some way?

In a new chat with Valve marketing head Doug Lombardi at our sister site Joystiq, he states, ” . . .it’s definitely a goal of ours to have cross-operability for those who own both games.” He points out that mod makers who are currently making levels for Left 4 Dead will have little trouble making those levels work for the sequel when it comes out. He added, ” . . . that’s stuff we’re still really working out and we’re not prepared to disclose just yet. We understand that the best possible scenario is to keep everyone together in the same community and treat it as a platform . . . “

Meanwhile despite the Internet furor over Left 4 Dead 2, Lombardi tells Eurogamer that the sequel is already secured twice as many pre-order copies as the first game did at this time last year.

Three games to light up your 4th

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Randy Nelson

The founding of a nation is pretty significant and well worth getting excited about. The best way to display said excitement is, of course, with massive, colorful airborne explosions, a.k.a. fireworks. Tomorrow night, towns across the USA will be putting on fireworks displays, big and small — but why should you have to wait for it to get dark? The games you’ll find after the break will let you get all explode-y from the comfort of your living room, without the charred mess and frantic 911 call. So, put on your favorite patriotic tune (it’s “The Stars & Stripes Forever” for us) and make with the clicking!

Researchers mine Second Life interaction logs to track trends

July 4th, 2009 / No Comments » / by Tateru Nino

While most actions people take in the flesh are ephemeral - performed fleetingly, and unmarked - MMOGs and virtual environments keep that data as a rule, usually most or all of it.

Three social researchers from the University of Michigan obtained data from Linden Lab about the possession and acquisition of 'gestures' (preprogrammed sequences of text, avatar animations and/or audio) and data about account creation dates and friends-lists, and studied how gestures passed from user to user.
